I Timothy 2:5-6

According to an article I researched, there are believed to be about 18,000 deities in the religions of the world today. Can you imagine that? What if they were all gods that really existed and we had to try and keep them all appeased? Based on how the various mythologies that have been written over the centuries, if these gods are anything like their stories, our world would be ripped to shreds, and we would be innocent victims of their cosmic temper tantrums. I am so glad that there is only one God; which is what Paul tells us in our text today.
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.”
I Timothy 2:5-6
There is only one God. He is the only one we have to worry about pleasing. Unfortunately, it is impossible for a sinner to please God. Habakkuk 1:13 says that God's eyes are too pure to look on sin. Because of our sinful condition, it is impossible for us to enter into God's presence; even in prayer. Our sin separates us from God completely. Many people think that they can plead their case before God, but in our sinful condition, we cannot even enter into his presence to attempt to plead our case. Our condition is on of being completely helpless and hopeless.
God did not want this for His creation. So, He became a man and paid the price for our sins, buying our pardon. Then, Jesus went to Heaven and sat down at the right hand of the Father (I Peter 3:22; Hebrews 1:3). There, He makes intercession for us as a mediator between us and God. It is His sacrifice and His work as our High Priest that allows us to come into the presence of God in prayers.
Paul says this after He tells Timothy to pray for the political leaders of their day. He is reminding Timothy that we worship Jesus because He not only died for us, but He lives for us as well. I want to pause right here and make something clear. Jesus lives for us in that He accomplishes the will of God the Father to redeem and restore us to a right relationship with Him. He DOES NOT serve us as though He is subordinate to us and must do our will. Too many people have that idea today. Jesus does not work for us. We are His servants, and we glorify God the Father when we glorify His Son.
This is not only a doctrinal statement, but a point of worship. Paul wants us to know that Jesus deserves even more worship and praise for the work of being our mediator. He is worthy by virtue of His being God. We love Him even more because of His saving work. We should not worship because we are obligated to, but rather because we willingly chose to.
Father, You are worthy of our praise. Jesus is worthy of our praise. If there were no means of redemption for us, You are still worthy of our praise. Oh, how much more we should worship and praise You because You did bring about salvation for us. Thank you! May we continuously love You more.
