"I AM"

John 18:3-6

Two words comprised of three letters, that is how God chose to sum up who He is. In Exodus 3, God sends Moses to deliver the Children of Israel out of slavery. He asks a logical question, "Who do I tell them sent me?" Of all the things God could have said, all the names He could have given Moses, He chose to say "I Am". When the soldiers came to the Garden of Gethsemane looking for Jesus, he answered them in with the same words, "I Am".
"Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground."
John 18:3-6
I would love to have a view from Heaven of this scene. This mob comes marching into the Garden to arrest Jesus with torches and weapons. Jesus is unarmed. He asks them who they are looking for and they say "Jesus of Nazareth". He replies "I Am", and with that they all get knocked down to the ground. While it may get lost in translation, Jesus said He is God. Not only did He say it, He demonstrated His power. Other than the fact that it was God's will that Jesus suffer and die for our sins, I do not understand how this group did not run away in fear.
"I Am" describes God as eternal, all powerful, and self-existing. He has always been and always will be. He has all power, and there is nothing in His creation that even comes close to being His rival. He exists because He exists, and is dependent upon nothing or no one else to exist. Jesus said that this is who He is. In John 8:57-59, He said the same thing, and notice how the Pharisees responded:
"Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by."
John 8:57-59
They understood exactly what He was claiming, but they did not believe Him. They though this was blasphemy or sacrilege. So, they tried to kill Him, but He walked right out of their presence and away from them. They had no power against Him, until He allowed them to take Him in the Garden. Even then, He still demonstrated that He was in control because He is the "I AM".
"You're the only God whose power none can contend You're the only God whose name and praise will never end You're the only God who's worthy of everything we can give You are God and that's just the way it is
You are God alone from before time began You were on Your throne You are God alone and right now In the good times and bad You are on Your throne And you are God alone"
